Ellen is a well-regarded singer of traditional folk ballads with an "expressive and haunting voice." (Pittsburgh Magazine)

Songs that were sung by generations of voices past now stir contemporary hearts.

Ellen has recorded two solo collections of traditional songs, Awake, Awake and Across the Blue Ridge Mountains, and two CDs with The Early Mays, The Early Mays and Chase the Sun. Ellen has  appeared as a guest on the recordings of southwestern Pennsylvania old-time music made by Snappin' Bug: Mark Tamsula and Richard Withers.

THE EARLY MAYS
Picture
Ellen and Emily Pinkerton, with their collaborators Rachel Eddy & Nicole Myers, share songs based in a love of American tradition, while also exploring their own creative voices. All are celebrated solo artists who bring their rich and carefully honed craft to the trio.

The Early Mays took home the blue ribbon in the Neo-Traditional Band Competition at Clifftop 2016 (The Appalachian String Band Music Festival), appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage in August 2017, and hit the #1 position on the National Folk-DJ Charts with their latest release, “Chase the Sun.” They were named Pittsburgh's 2014 Artists of the Year by WYEP.

The Early Mays were originally formed in 2013 by Emily, Ellen and their friend Judith Avers who left the group in 2015 to focus on her family and her songwriting. You can keep in touch with Judith at www.judithavers.com.
